This practical and focused CLE will examine key strategies for defending consumer debt matters in Minnesota and cover the mechanics of pre- and post-judgement garnishment, including wage and bank account levies, how to properly assert exemptions, and how to advise low-income clinets and those receiving public benefits.

Attendees will also learn how to identify and screen common defenses in medical debt lawsuits, use tools such as cease-and-desist letters, and evaluate next steps when traditional defenses are not available. The session concludes with a primer on federal consumer bankruptcy, including Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 basics, the automatic stay, pros and cons of filing, ethical considerations, and when bankruptcy may offer the most effective relief for a client's circumstances.
